Sociology midterm presentation

Hello,
My name is Gabriel and my name is kristianna and this is our midterm project we are doing
social inequality and class what determines social class okay so our first slide is on
social stratification and social stratification is the method by which society’s categorize
and rank members in a hierarchy all types of societies use social stratification, therefore
building levels and rankings in their community. Stratification is unavoidable and as communities
developed, people begin to classify their members. Stratification imposes inequalities
in societies, providing people with different opportunities, some more than others. Our
next slide is on Social Mobility. Social mobility is the movement of individuals or groups within
a stratification structure. A system allows for social mobility’s, which gives people
an opportunity to obtain a better future by moving up in the social ladder. There are
two types of social mobility. The first is vertical mobility which is the upward or downward
movement of occupational or social class. The second one is horizontal mobility which
is a change from one occupation to another at the same general status level. Our third
slide is on Max Weber and his three class system. His three class system is based on
three ideal types: class, status, and party. He used this framework to explain how people
stratified themselves within a society. He tied all three ideals closely and in relation
to power. Class is the power through economic order, status is the power through social
order, and party is the power through the political order. wealth and capital, wealthy
consists of property, commodities, assets, and income. most important are tangile assets.
like property houses boats jewelry etc. anything that you own that can accumulate into your
net worth the higher your net worth is the higher social class you are income gives the
power to posses more assets shows what kind of car you drive and what neighborhood you
live in how big your house is these usually will represent what social class you are in.
being within a system occupation is very important because it comes with rewards, stability,
and benefits like health care. Power and status Power is the ability to carry out your will
despite resistance. power and status can come in two ways. achieved status is when someone
achieves their own status and wealth which is the summary of the american dream coming
up from nothing or ascribed status is when someone inherits from their family. Those
with the most power and high status will be in the higher social classes. Max weber defines
his version of power the chance of a man or of a number of men to realize their own will
in a communal action even against the resistance of others who are participating in the same
action. More power comes with a higher status in society. The less you have, the more vulnerable
you are to being deceived and persuaded against your will for someone else’s benefit. Education
and employment also play a big part within a person’s wealth and capital. Education
determines type of employment which also determines a person’s income. Income corresponds to
the level of education of a person. Typically, a person with higher education will allow
for a higher income. Education plays a huge role in allowing a person to gain social mobility
and gain more opportunities. A person’s education level and employment type is a big
determinant of their social class.
