SBS Majors: Sociology

As a Hispanic woman I know that we’re not always heard or maybe valued in ways that we should be the study of sociology Has just opened my mind to realize that our institutions can change and that people need to be heard My name is Rene Villamen. I’m a wife and a mother and sociology major Sociology is connected to all of the other social sciences It’s a really great major for people who want to understand how the social world works instead of just making a lot of assumptions We use a lot of evidence They found that when they send out resumes with a black sounding name or a white sounding name white sounding name gets many more callbacks When I took my Gender Studies classes, I was just blown away at all The things that I thought were normal. The treatment of women, minorities, oppressed people sociology means that you’re looking at everything you’re looking at the individual and how they interact with groups to Nation-states and influence they have on people’s lives The skills I’ve learned in sociology are community service. I’ve learned to communicate and to relate to other and also I’ve been able to apply it We can predict life expectancy based on zip code, income, and education level Sociology has given me a pathway to stand up for the inequalities that exist Name is Albert, first for medical student. For me, it means much more than just having a degree hung up on the wall It’s something that is in my heart and it’s something that I use every single day of my life for example, if a patient comes from a Historically marginalized area and group and I’m able to understand and take the patient in as a whole It’s just a way to break down the socio-economic Phenomenons which is class, race, and gender. The one thing they always say to me is I want to change the world I want to make a difference that’s really their driving passion is, and Sociology is where they find a home because they understand that they have to understand society to make changes And that’s really the kind of students. They are their future changemakers
