SAHF: New wheels for pediatric patients

Getting kids to leave their parents to
go to the operating room is one of the hardest things we do. There’s a
lot of tears. There’s tears in mom and dad’s eyes, there’s tears in the child’s
eyes. Sometimes you feel like you’re ripping them away from their loved ones. Actually I was looking online at an article I came across and there was a Children’s Hospital in California someone had donated a ride on car. The idea of the car was to really make sure that kids had less anxiety going into surgery, and studies showed it really made a big difference, so I
thought, you know, if they did it in California why can’t we do it here? We saw it with the first child that saw that car in the lobby. The first thing they wanted to do was jump in that car. It was amazing! He was so happy, his face just lit up. Didn’t think about anything else in the world, just saw the car and wanted to drive it. So I think we’re gonna bring kids in happier into the operating room, and then they’re going to leave in a new stretcher we’re getting which is going to make them safer too. It’s win-win all the way. It’s great. The idea of this stretcher was that we wanted to do both ends of it. The car was that fun portion, where the kid could go into the surgery and you’d have some fun with it, but
obviously it’s not sensible on the way out of the surgery, so the pediatric
stretcher we thought would cover both ends of it. I’ve been doing this for a long time and I’ve seen a lot of stuff come in the doors that the Foundation
brought in. Donations are the only way we get these kinds of things. There’s a lot of services we didn’t realize that would have to take place outside of the community, or equipment the Hospital wouldn’t have, if it wasn’t for the Foundation. It’s really up to our support, and the support of the community, to provide the necessary equipment and keep it up-to-date with technology. It’s not always about the size of the gift. Large donations are great, and we’ve done them in the past, the hospital needs them,
but I think there’s a way for everyone to give back to Sault Area Hospital Foundation No donation is too big or too small, and it’s sometimes the smallest thing that makes the biggest difference. This is where you get your care so this is where you should put your money these are the people that are going to take care of you, and this is the equipment that’s going to be used on you and your family and that’s why you have a stake in it. So give. Donate generously.
