Pygmalion Festival in Your Community

Heather: IT’S YOUR CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE A WEEKEND OF ART, MUSIC, FOOD, AND ENTERTAINMENT. Tim: HAPPENING IN YOUR COMMUNITY, PYGMALION FESTIVAL. WE HAVE JUSTINE WITH THE FESTIVAL, TALKING ABOUT PYGMALION AS A WHOLE BUT A CERTAIN PART OF IT. TELL US ABOUT PYGMALION FOR THOSE WHO AREN’T FAMILIAR WITH WHAT’S GOING ON. Guest: WE HAVE A WEEK LONG OF ENTERTAINMENT BASICALLY HAPPENING, MUSIC, ART. I RUN THE MAID FEST, WHICH IS AN ARTS AND CRAFT COMPONENT. LOCAL AND REGIONAL ARTISANS ARE COMING IN FOR IT. EVERYTHING FROM COMEDIANS LIKE MICHELLE WOLFE. IF YOU’VE HEARD HER. AND YOU KNOW, YOUR POP CULTURE HOTTY RIGHT NOW FROM “QUEER EYE”, WHICH IS ANTHONY.” YOU KNOW, KIND OF A LITTLE BIT FOR EVERYONE. Heather: HOW DID PYGMALION FESTIVAL GET STARTED? Guest: SO MY HUSBAND SETH AND I HAD TRAVELLED DOWN TO ATHENS, GEORGIA. AND WE WERE GOING TO ASPECTS, WHICH IS KIND OF A COMPARABLE COLLEGE TOWN, LONG-RUNNING FESTIVAL THEY HAD DOWN THERE. AND BASICALLY, JUST SAID, WE NEED TO BRING THIS TO CHAMPAIGN-URBANA. AND SO HE JUST STARTED PUTTING SHOWS TOGETHER IN PLACES LIKE PARADISO, COWBOY MONKEY AND JUST, YOU KNOW, MAKING IT HIGHER PROGRAMMED WEEKEND OF MUSIC SHOWS, CALLING IT A FESTIVAL, AND IT GROWING INTO A BIGGER PRODUCTION. Heather: YOU’RE NOW AT KRANNERT, WHICH IS EXCITING. IS THIS SOMETHING NEW WE BRING IN THE HACKER HERE? Guest: I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR SHARING THAT. [LAUGHTER] Heather: THIS IS A NEW CONCEPT, RIGHT? Guest: YES, WE HAD IT PREVIOUSLY, BUT NOW IT’S AT KRANNERT CENTER. Tim: A HACK IS PEOPLE COMING TOGETHER TO USE THEIR SKILL SETS TO DO ONE BIGGER THING. I ASSUME THIS IS THE IDEA. GIVE US DETAILS. Guest: ABSOLUTELY. IN PREVIOUS YEARS — AGAIN, I’VE ONLY BEEN BACK A COUPLE OF MONTHS. I’VE BEEN WITH THE SCHOOL FOR SIX YEARS, SO I HAVEN’T SEEN THE HACK FLUSHED OUT. THE HACK IS BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER TO WORK ON CONCEPTS TYPICALLY THROUGH CODING AND DEVELOPMENT. THERE ARE COOL CONCEPTS BASED ON A SINGULAR THEME. THIS YEAR, WE’RE MOVING IT OVER TO KRANNERT. SO IT’S AN INTERDISCIPLINARY PROJECT. YOU HAVE MY TEAM WITH THE DESIGN AND ALONG WITH PYGMALION AND KRANNERT AND RESEARCH PARK AND PARKLAND HAVE COME UP WITH A COOL CONCEPT CALLED HOME. THERE IS A CONCERT HAPPENING AT KRANNERT THE SAME WEEKEND, CALLED “HOME”.” IT FOCUSES ON USING THE MEANINGS BETWEEN THE CONCEPTS OF A HOUSE VERSUS A HOME. AND HOW YOU SEE SOME OF THOSE THEMES COME OUT AS YOU WATCH PEOPLE IN THESE SPACES. SO WE’RE BRINGING THIS THEME TO THE HACKATHON. WE HOPE TO GET AS MANY PEOPLE WITH BACKGROUNDS AND SKILL SETS TO COME TOGETHER AND HACK TOGETHER SOLUTIONS TO COMMUNITY ISSUES. BUT JUST TO ENJOY THE SPACE. SO IT’S NOT JUST CODERS AND DEVELOPERS. BUT ANYBODY WITH ANY SKILL SET, A STUDENT, PROFESSOR, COMMUNITY MEMBER IN GENERAL TO COME OUT AND BE PART OF THAT. Heather: HMMM… Tim: IT SOUNDS MORE HIGH-BROW THAN I’M PREPARED FOR. IS THERE SOMETHING — I KNOW YOU DON’T WANT TO PIGEON HOLE ANYBODY. WHAT ARE GROUPS THAT THEY MIGHT COME UP WITH? WE’RE GOING FOR BIG THINGS OUTSIDE OF HOME. WITH THAT, CIVIL RELATIONS, POPULATION, ARCHITECTURE IN THE HOME, A.I. TECHNOLOGY IN RESIDENCE HALLS AND TALKING ABOUT RELATIONS LIKE LAW ENFORCEMENT AND THE COMMUNITY. AND SO WE HAVE COOL PEOPLE COMING TO SPEAK ON THAT TO BE THERE LIKE A VOICE OF INSPIRATION TO SPEAK ABOUT THINGS LIKE THAT. Heather: SO THIS IS COINCIDING WITH PYGMALION FESTIVAL? Guest: YES. Heather: OKAY. I THOUGHT IT WAS SOMETHING NEW. MY BAD. Guest: BUT NEW BEING AT KRANNERT CENTER. SO IT’S MORE ACCESSIBLE FOR THOSE WHO GO IN AND OUT OF THE BUILDING TO WITNESS IT IN PASSING EVENING. AND TAKE A MORE INTEREST THAN A RESEARCH PARK AND NOT BEING ABLE TO GET TO THAT SPACE. Heather: IF YOU CHECK IT OUT IN PASSING, IS IT SOMETHING YOU DON’T NEED TO SIGN UP FOR? JUST COME? Guest: THERE’S DIFFERENT TIERS. IF YOU’RE REALLY INTERESTED IN BEING PART OF A HACKING TEAM, YOU HAVE TO REGISTER, RIGHT. SO YOU CAN DO THAT NOW UP UNTIL THE DAY OF, THE HOUR OF. BUT IT’S OPEN. ANYBODY WHO WANTS TO COME THROUGH AND SEE WHAT’S HAPPENING, WE HAVE THE DOORS OPEN FOR PEOPLE TO SEE THOSE THINGS AS WELL. Heather: NICE! Tim: IS THERE ANY ONE THING YOU’RE MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS YEAR? YOU’VE DONE THIS IN YEARS’ PAST. WHAT EX-SITES YOU THE MOST? Guest: TO ANTHONY. Tim: HE’S THE FOOD GUY FROM “QUEER EYE?” RIGHT? Guest: HE IS. Guest: I’VE NOT BEEN UP ON MY POP CULTURE RECENTLY, HAVING CHILDREN AND NOT WATCHING T.V. AS MUCH. I PICKED UP A COUPLE OF EPISODES ON NETFLIX. AND HE’S SO CHARMING. I THINK THEIR MISSION OF BRINGING FOOD AND CULTURE AND LIGHT TO PEOPLE’S LIVES IS SPECIAL. AND IT’S SOMETHING ANYONE CAN ENJOY. Tim: I’M NOT GOING TO LIE. I CRY EVERY EPISODE. I REALLY DO. Guest: I FOUND MYSELF CRYING. I NEVER DO THIS. IT WAS AMAZING. Heather: JORDAN AND I HAVE TO TAKE YOUR WORD FOR IT. Tim: IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN IT, WATCH IT. Guest: YEAH. Heather: WOW, I’M INTRIGUED NOW. ALL RIGHT. Tim: ALSO, GO TO PYGMALION. WE’LL HAVE DETAILS ON THE HACK AND EVERYTHING GOING ON AT PYGMALION ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE. YOU CAN LOOK AT THEIR WEBSITE ON OUR SCREEN. LATER, WHY YOU DON’T HAVE
