Martin Luther King’s Legacy: Community Service or Protest?

Martin Luther King’s Legacy: Community Service or Protest?

good afternoon everybody get a chance to
hear and take action news react radio so but they’ll be with us on this special
not duration addition this is the show at the time of what’s
going on the world of politics and government what you can do to influenced
outcomes coming up we’ll talk with alin rosenblatt doctor did you call on
twitter about what’s been happening in social media over the last
couple of days but uh… this is a day in washington
were a lot of people are out there um… helping in terms of community service
doing volunteer work this is a national day of service president momma started
up back in a two thousand eight with his inauguration and two thousand nine actually building
on his roots as a community organizer encouraging everybody they get out there this saturday before
ninety rationing and do something in your community but its
paining offense with its cleaning up garbage whether it’s teaching is harry
is a computer as we often do i hear at the station in some of the group so we
partner with endeavor of the start of the overall
social as far as the legacy are i’ll feel at this point of president on in
the national day of the service is one of those things that uh… sorta
slipped it under the radar four years ago it is not gration that could have a
real lasting legacy that that’s a big step the president so it’s a yet we
should have a national day of service the saturday before inauguration that’s
a big deal yeah no i think it’s of these wonderful
honestly of i think unfortunately martin luther king day has fallen by the
wayside in american culture is not doesn’t have the key cannot ical status
for many of of a thanksgiving or july fourth and i think that’s because there’s no
resources to do with it but when you build in that practice that
people now know this is an opportunity uh… to set aside time to volunteer in
the community to help people that back in the back that can be the whole marca that can be sort of what makes
moser king they stand out and i i’m excited about that the connection between a martin luther
king day and the sort of national day of service uh… mcphee it it feels like this because there is sort
of merge but that may be in a inadvertent way that they just seem like
four years ago president on one of this is all about you know honoring community
service in helping one another as sort of taking the time asli marcus other
transition a peaceful continuation of power but uh… uh… i mean your point
about national service today and martin luther
king day ovals joining is an interesting yahaan i think i it is interesting what it is also
interesting because it’s not necessarily would be frankly uh… historically
honest take on martin luther king’s legacy
because of the end of the day this was someone who thought that volunteerism was not enough was important but was not
enough uh… i think other put this out there millions maybe it is in the community
service day we think our community service in civil
disobedience and protest a because martin luther king
understood that uh… you know that that that certain
injustices just a justice department urges is is sort of just is justice
denied it if it’s been too for too long then it you can’t wait to do to legal
system and you can assume we wait to tutsis room to piecemeal through
community service and she needs a needs actually get out
there in the streets obviously there few issues that we would
call as morally galvanizing and rages as the civil rights movement it
states but there’s still so rights issues in
this country and i think some of us would say the the drug enforcement regime is one
of those issues that we’re just talking about whether or not you think that
uh… it should still remain technically illegal on an enforced in a different
way we we are locking up hundreds of thousands of young people
for excedrin societe good people of color
for that reason so it that should be our civil rights issue
although of our time and i i wanna make martin luther king day community service and community protest day well one of
the things that i would not like the related to that guys first protest is
that you know if you look at the mall addison
i duration weekend you can’t move ahead with all the iran iraq fencing and all
the security checkpoint and it’s got to the point we’ve seen as both a political
conventions on presidential debates where security concerns are so great
that you know how this real physical separation between people who are
participating in an event such as participating in inauguration the people who are turning it and then there’s a separation from
people who want to make their voices heard and say president bob maybe you
should speak out about d_c_ statehood maybe should speak ill of about you know drug policy and there’s this there’s no way at this point american
has been a triple the the fencing in security for these two worlds the next
so even if you wanted to protest but if you wanted to picket it’s almost
impossible now in this day and age in washington d_c_
retaining these major events to get anywhere near where the media
might be able to notice you or where the speakers of the participants might be
able to take notice of what it is that you care about and to me that’s perhaps
the greatest you know the saddest thing about the
security state that we live in now yeah i actually agree we should have
sort of national days of protest in activism but even if we wanted to do that we
couldn’t get uniform blocks close to the capitol with our signs or or boards or
anything else you might on because that’s unfortunately we decided that no
securities paramount and if that means that in a political
convention are debater inauguration we’ve got to have a protest zone which is ten blocks away
from people so be it uh… you know it’s if thats it’s hard it’s hard to get
protest notice when the media can’t get in and out and people can move around brief rupali and it’s in any can’t confront the
people you want to protest
