Know the Risk – Raise Your Shield: Human Targeting

Good morning. Welcome
to the conference. Oh my gosh I am SO sorry! It’s alright my friend. Besides I see you’re
a fellow alumni. You went to Tech? Yeah, macroeconomics program. No way I did the same program. Huh, small world! I’m Peter. James. Great to meet you. Welcome to the conference. Good morning. Welcome
to our conference. Last name? McCallister, James. Oh my gosh I am SO sorry! It’s alright my friend. da-ding VO: Hope you are well. VO: All caught up from the
Seattle conference yet? VO: I am busy this week. VO: Lots of meetings on
that new trade agreement. VO: Are you still
coming to DC next week? VO: Yes. I’d still like
to do dinner and drinks. VO: We’ll call it a “working
dinner”. VO: I will charge it to the
company. VO: Sounds great. VO: While I’m there any chance I
could see the analysis your… office did of the trade
agreement you told me about? VO: My boss is demanding
my input and I could… really use your perspective
one analyst to another. VO: I’d really appreciate it. Hi Ellen? Its James. James McCallister. From the Analytics Department. Do you have a minute
to meet in person? You did right thing
coming to us. Well that last message he sent.
Something seemed…wrong. You were right. It was wrong. He was a foreign national asking you to give him
proprietary information. Well were both economic analysts and none of the information
was classified or anything. That doesn’t matter. Let’s just start
from the beginning. How did you meet Peter? Well we met at a trade
conference about three weeks
ago. I accidentally bumped into him. We started talking and
we had a lot in common. Hobbies, politics… We both went to Tech
and studied economics. Look James based
on our experience We doubt Peter is an analyst. The exact same school,
hobbies, politics? Doubtful. It’s probably
all fabricated. I don’t think Peter
would lie to me. James I doubt his
name is even Peter. His job was likely
to use this information to show you how much
you have in common. To build a relationship with you
and gain your trust. He’s either a foreign
intelligence officer or works
for one. He may have acquired information
about your background from one of the many recent data
breaches you’ve heard about. He probably got information
about your interests from social
media. He targeted you. Why would anyone target me? Because of where you work and the kind of information
you have access to. I don’t work at a
secret intelligence agency or with classified information.
I’m an analyst. I don’t even have
a security clearance. Doesn’t matter. There are hundreds of thousands
of government and corporate
employees with access to information that is important
to foreign governments. It doesn’t have
to be classified. It could be information about technolgy, communications,
breakthrough research or anything else our foreign
adversaries and competitors
want. They’re targeting
workers like you with access to that kind of
sensitive information. So what am I supposed to do? Stop communicating
with Peter immediately. in the future know
that chance meetings with someone like him
can be more than coincidence. And trust your instincts
like you did with this. Know the Risk.
Raise your Shield.
