How To Get Free Community College

How To Get Free Community College

SAN FRANCISCO IS NOW OFFICIALLY
THE FIRST CITY IN THE UNITED STATES TO OFFER FREE
COMMUNITY COLLEGE TUITION TO ALL RESIDENTS. THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH
YOUR INCOME LEVEL OR AGE OR GENDER OR EVEN ANY OF OTHER
STUFF YOU SEE WHEN YOU ARE FILLING OUT A FAST PERFORM. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS LIVE IN
SAN FRANCISCO FOR AT LEAST A YEAR AND HE WILL QUALIFY FOR
THIS FREE TUITION. SAN FRANCISCO MAYOR AND LEE
ANNOUNCED IT WOULD START SETTING ASIDE 5.4 MILLION PER YEAR TO
COVER ENROLLMENT FEES AND OTHER EXPENSES FOR CITY COLLEGE OF SAN
FRANCISCO STUDENTS, MAKING IT THE FIRST CITY IN THE NATION’S
OFFER FREE TUITION TO RESIDENTS. ALSO THE COLLEGE WE USE 2.1
MILLION OF THAT TOTAL EACH YEAR TO COVER THE COST OF CREDIT
CLASSES FOR CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS WHO HAVE LIVED IN SENTENCES GO
FOR AT LEAST A YEAR. SO THIS IS GREAT. AND I THINK THAT IT DOES TWO
THINGS. 1ST OF ALL OF COURSE IT HELPS
PEOPLE AFFORD A COLLEGE EDUCATION WHICH I THINK IS
IMPORTANT THAT IT IS FINALLY TAKING MONEY AND
INVESTING IT BACK INTO THE PEOPLE AS OPPOSED TO SPENDING ON
NONSENSE. THIS IS THE KIND OF STUFF I
THINK TAXPAYER MONEY SHOULD BE USED FOR BUT IT IS ALSO A WAY
TO COMBAT GROWING ISSUE IN THE BAY AREA PARTICULARLY SAN
FRANCISCO OF INCOME INEQUALITY. YOU SEE THOSE WORKING IN SILICON
VALLEY MAKING A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF MONEY AND THEN THERE
ARE OTHER PEOPLE, PRETTY MUCH EVERYONE ELSE KIND OF
GETTING SHUT OUT OF SAN FRANCISCO BECAUSE IT IS BECOMING
SO UNAFFORDABLE. EXACTLY, AND LOOK JUST DOING
IT LOOKS GOOD FOR YOUR CITY IF YOU WANT THE RECOGNITION
EVERYTHING, BUT THINK ABOUT PEOPLE CAN MOVE NOW FREELY
REVENUE ONE AROUND THE COUNTRY AND YES, YOU HAVE TO PUT
A COUPLE ME DOLLARS TO PAY FOR THIS TUITION BUT IF YOU CAN
THEORETICALLY BRING IN A FEW THOUSAND RESIDENTS EACH YEAR,
THOSE PEOPLE WILL PAY TAXES. THEY MIGHT LIVED THERE FOR
DECADES. THIS COULD MAKE ECONOMIC SENSE
FOR A CITY TO PROVIDE THIS AS AN INITIAL OUTLAY OF MONEY
TO PEOPLE WHO MIGHT BE LIFELONG RESIDENTS AND RAISE
FAMILIES THERE, PAY TAXES FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES. THIS COULD BE GREAT FOR CITIES
TO SET UP IF THEY WANT TO GET THAT MONEY LONG-TERM. EXACTLY. THERE ARE OTHER CITIES AND
STATES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY THAT ARE TRYING TO THINK OF WAYS
TO MAKE COLLEGE MORE AFFORDABLE AND SO THERE ARE VARIOUS POLICY
IDEAS BEING PUT OUT THERE BUT NONE OF THEM ARE AS I GUESS
LIBERAL AD OR PROGRESSIVE AS THIS ONE IS BECAUSE THIS ONE
HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR INCOME LEVEL. I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE BEEN
CONCERNED, BUT IF YOU DO THIS, IF YOU JUST OFFER FREE
TUITION ACROSS THE BOARD, THEN WEALTHY PEOPLE ARE GOING TO TAKE
ADVANTAGE OF IT BECAUSE WEALTHY PEOPLE ARE DYING TO SEND THE
RICH KIDS TO COMMUNITY COLLEGE. IF A BUNKER TRUMP WANTS TO
GO TO SAN FRANCISCO CITY COLLEGE, LET HER. THAT’S ANOTHER THING, I DON’T
REALLY CARE. IF A WEALTHY FAMILY WANTS TO
SEND THEIR CHILD TO A COMMUNITY COLLEGE THAT HAS FREE TUITION,
AWESOME. I THINK THAT’S GREAT. ANOTHER THING TO KEEP IN MIND,
SOME OF THE PRIVATE COLLEGES DESPISE THIS BECAUSE THEY FEEL
LIKE IT IS GOING TO HURT THEIR BOTTOM LINE AND MORE STUDENTS
ARE LIKELY TO GO FOR MORE AFFORDABLE OPTIONS. MAYBE YOU WILL LOWER YOUR
PRICES A LITTLE BIT. I REMEMBER THE FIRST
ARGUMENT DURING THE CALIFORNIA PRIMARY WHEN WE HAD THE DUELING
EDUCATIONAL DEBATES AND HILLARY CLINTON SAYS, I AM NOT
GOING TO SET UP A PLAN THAT IS GOING TO BENEFIT DONALD
TRUMP. BARRON TRUMP IS NOT GOING TO
YUKON. THAT IS A SILLY ARGUMENT AND
EVEN IF ONE OR TWO DID, IT WOULD BE SUCH A SMALL PORTION OF THE
FUNDING, TO SET THAT UP AS THE ESSENTIAL DISTINCTION BETWEEN
THE TWO POLICIES IS RIDICULOUS, WHETHER A DEMOCRAT IS MAKING
THAT ARGUMENT OR REPUBLICAN. THIS IS GOOD AND HOPEFULLY
IT SPREADS TO OTHER CITIES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. I THINK WE REALLY NEED TO HELP
OUR STUDENTS AFFORD COLLEGE.

What it DOES mean is that intelligent but poor kids can still get a higher education and are not necessarily fucked just because of their economic background. What it also means is that fewer stupid rich kids fill up the class rooms, becuse the smartest get in, not the richest. Scaaaaaaaaaaary, eh?

Too little too late. This needs to be a nationwide policy and it needs to happen now. America's failed education system has already produced a generation of uneducated ignorant hicks who voted for a mentally unstable, narcissistic, corrupt, racist manchild about to utterly ruin the country for decades to come and undo what little progress we managed to achieve when we had sane people in government. A failure of education leads to a failure of democracy. The Trump voter has failed America.

Conservatives want free stuff. They don't want to pay taxes but they want to enjoy things like roads (& their blessed military).

  • alecia175 says:

Detroit had this program for Community College for years, called the Detroit Promise. I think it started in 2013, but they recently expanded it to 4 year colleges in 2016, if you have a GPA of 3.0 while in community college, but you have to live in Detroit. So now if you live in Detroit you can now have 4 years of college for FREE!. I have lived in Detroit my whole life and I really wish they had started this 10 years earlier maybe I would not have 70,000 in student loan debt. It's has not raised the cost of living here they just stopped bullshitting and allocated the money they were already getting into something for the public this time. Nobody moved because taxes were to high, gas is still 1.99 a gallon, and my bills is still the same. They don't report that though when they come to Detroit all they show is the bad, all they talk about is burnt houses and crime they don't talk about what were doing that's right or the neighborhoods that look out for each other.

  • Izrael Avila says:

Sorta funny. I mean if you can afford to live in San Francisco community college can't be that much of an expense to you.

  • skynight113 says:

  • ISupportAccountability says:

San Fransisco is going to blossom in all aspects when education is on the right track and no one on the right is able to comprehend this.

  • Lemons says:

The best part about this is that the money will be generated from real estate tax on properties that are $5 million and more. So essentially the wealthy and the corporations will be paying to cover the costs.

  • Hammer Face says:

Why don't you guys implement the A+ program? All you have to do is 50 hours of tutoring in High school and you get two years of community college paid for. It's not free, the money comes from the state lottery though. Missouri and other states have it, and it's what I and so many others are doing right. It works pretty well.

  • we need more affordable housing built says:

I live in the inland empire of California and I get the California bog waiver that waives school tuition and fees , nothing really new here only that San Francisco doesn't have an income limit on going to college in there city , the California bog waiver waives tuituon at community colleges but only if your poor like me and make under 16,000 a year , witch I think is pretty retarded because if you work full time min wage , you make a min of 18,000 a year 🙁🙁🙁

  • David Folse says:

This seems like it might cause a problem that nobody is talking about. With just about everybody able to get into community college all at once it seems like there will be a class availability problem. From my experience the hard classes to get a seat in are the lower level classes especially math English what ever 101 that every single major needs to have their box checked to move on

The average price of a home in San Francisco is around 1.1 MILLION dollars. If the rich people aren't going to go to the free colleges then who will?

  • Ivan Contreras says:

It is step in the right direction but it still isn't enough, we in the westcoast should get rid of the nation state, representative "democracy" and the old corporate economy. Replace it with full political and economic democratization.

  • houchi69 says:

Great. This is great news. Community College should be free.
In CA though, you can always apply for Board of Governor Waiver for Community College tuition.
CA also passed a Proposition in 2012 that raised the sale tax for .25% (someone correct me if I remembered it wrong) to fund public university, which totally worked. My tuition was not raised that year, which it has been every year before.

  • Aurelius Leslie says:

am I missing something, but if poor people can't afford the rent in San Francisco, how in the Hell is free community college beneficial to the poor?

  • Shane NT says:

Free college courses are already available at publicly funded high schools. Take a full slate of Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate classes and you will save yourself at least a year of time and tuition.

  • njintau says:

And now we get to find out how San Francisco will turn out. If the conservatives are right, it will soon turn into a hell hole where no one has enough money to pay for anything and its just a bunch of liberal zombies seeking out safe spaces and calling everyone bigots.

  • Robyn Palumbo says:

I'm so proud of my city for making this happen! Mayor Ed Lee didn't do this. The voters approved it on the ballot 2 years ago. Mayor Lee was taking the $ we voted for and not allowing it on city college. He deserves zero credit. Jane Kim and The Board of Supervisors made him do it.

  • jayinla310 says:

Great. city where renting a tent (literally, check AirBNB) can run $1,000 or more a week, then city college tuition is as free for the rich. It's a start, but unless people have affordable places to live on a real salary, then it is pointless.
