Hoonigan Goes to Final Bout: America’s Greatest Grassroots Drift Event?

(sci-fi music) – [Hert] This might be,
like my favorite car here. And I’m not even a big Nissan fan, but this thing is perfect. – The idea is to have a really normal car. Like if you drove it, it’s like a Camry. I’d let my mom drive. – [Hert] This is clean man. – [Liam] Yes, this is the engine. (whistles) – So, it was originally
built by Cockpit Tatebayashi. They chose everything about it. It’s Tomei cams, Tomei
metal Gasket, HKS Gt30/40, pretty relaxed. Yeah. – [Rob] You seeing
this Hert? Look at this, all Titanium and the piping
is Titanium as well down here. – You gotta have Titanium,
which is like pretty… – [Hert] Gotta have it. – If you don’t have Titanium Piping, don’t come to Final Bout. – [Hert] Yeah, yeah. (chuckles) Well, I guess I’ll go home. (crowd laughs) – Check out the tail lights. – [Hert] Yeah, all everything. – [Ilia] Crystal tail lights, very important on a white car. Don’t come to Final Bout with a white car without crystal tail lights. – [Hert] Where’s this,
where are the rules? (crowd laughs) Yeah, why can’t I, can I
see these rules please? – It’s unwritten! (sci-fi music) (clicking) (static) – All right, all right, all right. It is like, 11:30 pm, spent all day getting Twerkstallion
ready for Final Bout. (engine revving) Yeah! Rob has been here since 10 am ready to go. – [Rob] Baby! – Finally made it to California. And we actually didn’t
wait that long for Hert, so that’s a good thing. – As usual, I’m holding him back. But, cars done, cars on the trailer, we’re gonna hit the road to
Utah to pick up Rob’s car, and then on the road to Final Bout. (Synth music) – [Woman] Final Bout is an
event that works to rekindle the excitement most
long-time drift fans felt when they first discovered drifting in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Aiming to organize grass
roots level drivers into stronger, more
connected organizations. Inevitably helping every aspect of the sport of drifting as a result. While professional drifting in the U.S. does have value to the drift community, it has ultimately moved away
from the roots of drifting. Final Bout is a place
where all those passionate about drifting can come and share the true art that is drifting. – I can’t wait to get
this trip started though, I’m actually pretty damn stoked. – [Hert] Yeah sorry it took so long. You know what it’s like! – I knew what to expect,
that’s why I slept all day. (chuckling) – [Hert] All right, let’s get it. (ominous music) (electric spiraling) (low-base guitar) – And just like that,
we time travel to Utah. – Yoo-hoo! – [Hert] Whoa, oh shit! My bad, bro! Let’s get to your shop
and get this shit done. (Humming The Lion Sleeps Tonight) – I’m gonna lower my car today guys. – Oh snap! – And put KF’s on it. (electrical saw running) (upbeat music) – [Rob] Ow! (electric saw running) – [Hert] It doesn’t come easy, (whining) you gotta chop everything up, all your nice stuff you gotta ruin. (drilling) (electric saw running) (air gun blowing air) (car door shuts) – [Hert] And just like
that, the cars are done. – [Rob] Oh, thanks for
cleaning my car, Hert. – [Hert] You’re welcome. – You’re a good friend. – [Hert] You’re very welcome. It feels good to see you on some really unnecessarily
heavy wheels. Woo, boy! – [Rob] Uh, and, I
mean, unnecessarily low. – [Hert] Eh, it could be lower but it’s okay I’ll let you have this one, I’ll, I’ll let you have this one. – You said, you said (chuckles) half-10 rocket car’s lower than mine. (continues laughing) – [Hert] The front, the
front’s pretty down there. The front is pretty down there, but everyone knows super
duper cheater bumpers so we’ll just… – That’s a bunch of bullshit. (chuckles) (engine revving) (whining) – [Hert] Tell us what happened? – Uh, I cracked my fender and I got stuck already,
we haven’t even left. – [Hert] Welcome. Welcome, Rob. – [Rob] Help me or let ’em go. (engine roaring) – Okay. – [Hert] There we go, there we go. – Great forklift lift up. – [Hert] Bro, load it
up. Leave my car behind. (car engine starts) (up beat music) – Another number 9, medium with Sprite – We are here at… Rob, why you, it’s not flex o-clock yet. We are here on time for Final Bout. It’s early, our cars are
working, they’re unloaded. – [Rob] We’ve had a nap. – We’ve napped, we ate,
I think we’re adults. – Yeah, no, we’re learning something. We’re learning something
after like 6 years of doing this, we’re
finally being on time. – So, for those of you who don’t know what Final Bout is, it’s basically some of the coolest drift cars across America come here to U.S. Air Motorsports Raceway to shred their cars. The keys of Final Bout
are Function and Form, your cars gotta look cool,
but you gotta drive it like you don’t give a
shit about it either. – Absolutely, and like
this track, legendary. Elevation changes everywhere, super grippy in some places and then
floating over the other. Like this wall – [Herts] This wall – [Rob] This wall eats (car drifting) So, if you ever wanna bring your car to Final Bout, you gotta
meet that criteria, Function, Form, drive like an asshole. – Absolutely. – (laughs) It’s the key, it’s the key. – I don’t think I’ve
seen one car that’s not – Every single car here is sick. – 100 plus. (low tempo music) – [Hert] This is the man, Ilia. Long time drifter, long time
Japanese drifting enthusiast and organizer of Final Bout amongst, you know, him and his team. – Yes. – [Hert] But, they have a beautiful team and we’re gonna start with you guys today. – [Ilia] So this is Josh’s car. It’s always the shiniest. – [Hert] Red-gasm. – [Ilia] You’d think he doesn’t drift it, but he definitely does. I would say that he’s the
best driver on our team, um, so this car looks like
it’s never been driven, but it does get driven really hard. (crowd laughs) – [Hert] What you working with? – [Josh] Oh, shit. Hey. The terminology is normal. – [Hert] Normal. – [Ilia] Tech normal. S-15 normal – Engine speckled normal. And it’s just stocked of 15 SR, tone x pre manifold, GP
sports, XNF1 Exhaust, we got ORC clotch, cubicle picolio, I just wanted to make sure the car was gonna run the whole week. – [Hert] So, so you literally had a 500 horse power 2J and you said Nah – Yeah, that’s the honest truth. – [Hert] Your turn. – Ah, okay so what follows is my car. This is an FDR-7, I wanted this car since I was like, 16 or younger, you know like, this has been basically everything I’ve worked for in my life was
to own this car right here. I daily drive it, every single
day, Monday through Sunday, you know, like errands. – [Hert] This is your everything. – [Ilia] Grocery store – This motors been in this car since 2003, it’s just a factory
Mazda crate motor with an EFR-7670 turbo, HKS V-mount. And a bunch of gold shit everywhere to make it look like a space shuttle. – [Hert] Yeah, I like that. – [Ilia] So, this is Simba’s car. Simba been an S-Chassis guy
since the very beginning. – [Hert] Yeah. – [Ilia] Simba’s had an
S-Chassis since like ’04. The hood is an origin
great wave hood that is- – [Hert] It’s like super rare isn’t it? – [Ilia] It’s extremely rare. – That’s like unattainable. – [Ilia] This is, this is the only one for this car in existence in the world. – [Hert] Wow. – Um, it’s been cracked a few times, it just keeps getting repaired. – [Hert] Yeah, yeah you gotta keep it alive. – Yeah. – [Hert] It’s wild man. – [Josh] Yeah, it’s
crazy that he’s got that. – [Hert] That’s wild. (calm tempo music) I didn’t expect to see a Corvette here. – [Ilia] Who owns this American car? And why are there stickers on it? (group laughs) Can we, can we speak with the owner? Do you have anything to
do with this Corvette? – Um, a little bit. – [Ilia] Okay. – [Hert] Just a little bit? – [Ilia] Tell us about it. – It’s the American dream pretty much. (group laughs) ♪ I am a real American ♪ (laughter continues) – [Hert] Yo, that was flawless victory. Well done, sir. – So these guys are not here right now but I do wanna point them out. Uh, this is D-Squad. They’re a very old Chicago crew. I love them, I love their cars. Yeah, they’re good – [Hert] OG’s? Game recognize game? – [Hert] Yeah this thing is dope. – [Ilia] Yeah, that’s
actually my old Cephiro. – [Hert] You just, you
just, sprinking, you just – [Man] Just so you
know, it’s my old Cephiro – I did own it for a little while. (chuckles) – [Hert] Ilia is here
to develop the culture. He’s just like, you get a
culture, you get a culture, – You get a car! You get a car! You get a car! You get a car! – [Hert] This is a sick squad though, Cehpiro, JZX90 – [Ilia] D squad kills it,
these guys are super dedicated, they’ve been doing it for forever, so I’m real proud of them. – [Hert] Yeah, this thing is, I really actually like that thing a lot. On the 15’s? – [Ilia] Yup. – [Hert] That’s tight. D- Squad. – [Ilia] Should we talk to this guy? – [Hert] Sure. – [Ilia Guy] Hey Alex, – Why is your car taken apart? – Um, because I was notified last minute that I was gonna be driving in this event, so I’m putting a trans
in it so I got 3rd gear. (laughs) – [Hert] So you came
here with a transmission? – [Alex] That’s already, yeah no, I didn’t have a
transmission, I found one, I said, you’re gonna meet me at Final Bout and we’re gonna swap it right now. And this is what’s happening. – That’s what it takes. – I got the notification and I’m like, I’m doing anything to make this happen. – [Hert] Oh, so you were on the wait list? – Yeah, yup. – [Hert] You were on the wait list, something happened, you were next in line. – And I was just like, – [Hert] You were like, I’m not missing this for anything. – [Alex] Not missing for anything. – [Hert] So, tell us why? Why Final Bout? – [Alex] Final Bout I
think is the best thing that’s happened to me
since, I don’t know, 2007. There’s been a change, I feel, in what drifting was and I think that this kind of brought it all back together. And when you look at the

this event is trying to do. – [Hert] Yup. – And to be apart of this
