BSc (Hons) Sociology at the University of Sunderland

BSc (Hons) Sociology at the University of Sunderland

The course is a scientific study of
society, both historically, presently… internationally, and nationally, and so
we’ll study things like Marxism… different theories of how society functions and also new theories that are also possibly coming in. Racial issues, gender issues, politics, policies… you cover quite a lot, criminology as well. We also do a placement which is relevant to your course as well. If you’ve already studied sociology, I think it’ great because you come in… there’s a little bit of a refresher at the start but you go in… so much more depth than what I imagine you would do in A levels and… again it just progresses and progresses
into things like globalisation as well which you learn in the third year which I really, really liked. In my second year I went to Australia. So I did migration and regional integration over there. I grew up in Australia and when the opportunity came up I just absolutely leapt on to it and thought right… this is a chance of seeing my family and studying at the same time… so I had my family support there as well. I recommend everybody studies abroad, it’s a great opportunity. I did a placement with Centre Point in Sunderland… so that was for homeless young people,
and I carried out a research placement with them but also visited young people
within the service. So I think quite a lot of people who do Sociology as a degree do go into the charity sector and stuff… and it’s something I’m quite interested in so I think that placement’s obviously going to benefit me because I’ve got experience now working in that sector. I’ve just got to say it’s a brilliant course. It’s so diverse and so many different things
that you can study and Sunderland is one of the best universities you could go to, I love it so much. Sunderland just, it seemed to be
more welcoming to sort of like working-class people as myself and I’ve
never looked back coming to Sunderland. The lecturers, the teachers, the staff are all second to none… The support you get here is just
absolutely brilliant. I think also, if you’ve never done anything sociological before if you never studied anything like that… again it’s great, you come in, you learn all the basics within a module… and then you’re right there with everyone else in the same level. So there’s no worry about
coming here without knowing any previous background. There’s no worry about maybe forgetting things you’ve already learnt, everything’s there and it’s great. Come to an Open Day, definitely, definitely, come to an Open Day… because you can get so much information from the lecturers and you can meet past students, you can meet ambassador’s, student reps… and it’s a great opportunity if you don’t, or if you’re not quite sure, of what you wanted to do… or where you wanted to study, absolutely go to the Open Day and… you’ll be hooked from the first time you go, I can guarantee it. Anyone who comes here will really enjoy it I think, like I said, the lecturers, great relationships… I think everyone I know’s left with a good
grade – I mean no one’s fell behind… everyone’s worked hard, it’s challenging,
but at the same time enjoyable. So I definitely recommend it to anyone
