2019 Presidential Address

2019 Presidential Address

YOUR BUSY AFTERNOON. I HOPE YOU ALL HAD A GOOD SUMMER WITH TIME TO ENGAGE IN YOUR WORK, TO TRAVEL AND TO RELAX WITH YOU FAMILY. IT IS IMPORTANT TO RENEW FOR THE ACADEMIC CAREER. I HAD A GREAT SUMMER INTERACTING WITH MANY GROUPS. I ALWAYS LIKE TO TELL STORIES ABOUT THOSE ENGAGEMENTS. I HAVE THE HONOR OF BEING THE BIG FACE FOR IOWA STATE. STUDENT STOP AND ENGAGE WITH ME AND THEY WANT TO TELL ME A STORY ABOUT THEIR TIME IN IOWA STATE. I WAS VISITING WITH THE DIFFERENT BOOTHS THAT WERE SHARING WHAT WAS LIKE TO STUDY ABROAD. ONE STUDENT STOPPED ME AND SAID, YOU ARE AND “INTERNET SENSATION.” WHEN YOU ARE A PRESIDENT, YOU HAVE TO WONDER IS THIS GOING TO BE GET ME FIRED. THAT’S THE FIRST THING THAT GOES TO OUR MIND. WHEN YOU DECIDED TO CANCEL CLASSES FOR 2.5 DAYS BECAUSE OF THE POLAR VORTEX, THAT MADE YOU AN INTERNET SENSATION. I HAVE A WONDERFUL TIME GETTING OUT AND VISITING WITH OUR STUDENTS AND HEARING THEIR STORIES, HAVING THEM TELL ME ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES. I DO THAT WITH MY WONDERFUL HUSBAND, ROBERT WAGNER. IT’S A WONDERFUL WAY TO LEARN HOW TO IMPROVE IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY. AGAIN, WELCOME. WELCOME TO THOSE OF YOU THAT ARE JOINING US. IT IS GOOD TO SEE ALL OF YOU. I HOPE YOU ALL RECEIVED MY WELCOME BACK E-MAIL. EVERYONE IS A CONTRIBUTING AUTHOR IN “WRITING THE NEXT CHAPTER OF INNOVATION AND EXCELLENCE AT IOWA STATE.” THANK YOU FOR YOUR MANY CONTRIBUTIONS. YOU RECOGNIZE VISHESH AND AUSTIN, PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT OF STUDENT GOVERNMENT BUT YOU MAY NOT RECOGNIZE MY CAR. I THANK THEM DEEPLY BECAUSE OF WHAT IT MEANT WAS ECOGNITION OF THE PROMISES THAT I MADE UP MY PRESIDENTIAL INSTALLATION LAST YEAR. WE WILL WERE SEEING THOSE PROMISES. THEY WERE SEEING THEM ON MY LICENSE PLATE AND OTHER LOCATIONS AROUND MY OFFICE. THEY WERE HEARING THEM IN MY CONVERSATIONS THAT I WAS HAVING WITH THEM. HERE ARE THE PROMISES THAT I MADE IN MY INSTALLATION. I PROMISED TO SERVE OUR GREAT UNIVERSITY SO THAT IT MAY REACH ITS HIGHEST POTENTIAL AND ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE. I PLEDGED TO LEAD THE UNIVERSITY FORWARD TO BECOME THE BEST LAND-GRANT UNIVERSITY. AND I VOWED THAT TOGETHER WE WOULD CONTINUE TO EXCEL IN OUR TEACHING, RESEARCH, AND EXTENSION PROGRAMS TO SUPPORT OUR LAND-GRANT MISSION AND THE PEOPLE AND ECONOMIC VITALITY OF THIS STATE. I BELIEVE THAT THE WAY WE WILL CONTINUE TO SERVE, LEAD, AND EXCEL IS BY CONSTANTLY INNOVATING. THROUGH INNOVATION WE REALLY LIFT UP THE MOST CREATIVITY, COLLABORATION OF LEADERSHIP THAT WILL TRULY ALLOW IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY TO MOVE FORWARD INTO BUILD A CULTURE OF SUCCESS THAT WE WANT AT THIS GREAT UNIVERSITY WE HAVE MADE GREAT PROGRESS IN THE LAST YEAR. TODAY WE ARE GOING TO CELEBRATE THAT ROGRESS. WE ARE GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES IN FRONT OF US. WE ARE GOING TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT THE FUTURE YEAR IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE, THE COMING YEAR IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE. I HATED TO LEAVE THAT SLIDE. THIS UNIVERSITY IS TRULY GREAT BECAUSE OF ALL OF YOU. WE HAVE AN EXCELLENT TEAM OF FACULTY AND STAFF WHO WORK TOGETHER EVERY DAY TO CARRY OUT OUR LAND-GRANT MISSION, — I’M GOING TO INVITE OUR LEADERSHIP TEAM TO COME ON STAGE AND BE RECOGNIZED SO NONE OF YOU CAN’T DISREGARD MY REQUEST. AMY WARD, P&S COUNCIL PRESIDENT. ELEANOR FIELD, GPSS PRESIDENT. AUSTIN AND VISHESH, STUDENT GOVERNMENT PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT. PLEASE, UP AND BE RECOGNIZED AGAIN. ZACK LEIST, STUDENT MEMBER OF THE BOARD OF REGENTS. ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR THIS GREAT GROUP OF LEADERS. [ APPLAUSE ] EVERY DAY WHEN I WALK INTO EVERY DAY WHEN I WALK INTO BEARDSHEAR HALL, I SEE A QUOTE ON THE EAST WALL BY FORMER PRESIDENT GREG GEOFFROY THAT READS, “AN EXCELLENT UNIVERSITY IS THE PRODUCT OF AN OUTSTANDING FACULTY.” THIS IS A PHOTO OF ONE OF OUR MOST OUTSTANDING FACULTY! DR. PAT THIEL IS A DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR OF CHEMISTRY AND MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING, AND A FACULTY SCIENTIST AT THE AMES LABORATORY. THIS PAST YEAR SHE WAS ELECTED TO THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES. PAT IS RECOGNIZED FOR HER RESEARCH ON SURFACE CHEMISTRY WHICH HAS LED TO IMPORTANT ADVANCEMENTS IN QUASICRYSTALS AND METAMATERIALS. THIS HONOR PLACES HER AMONG THE RANKS OF ALBERT EINSTEIN, MARGARET MEAD, AND BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, WHO WERE ALSO MEMBERS OF THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES. WE ARE SO BLESSED THAT PAT IS PART OF THE FACULTY AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY. ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF OUR OUTSTANDING FACULTY, DR. DEBRA MARQUART, PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH. SHE WAS APPOINTED THIS YEAR BY GOVERNOR KIM REYNOLDS AS IOWA’S POET LAUREATE. THIS HONORARY POST MAKES HER THE STATE’S OFFICIAL POETIC VOICE AND POET ADVOCATE. IT HAS BEEN AN EXCEPTIONAL YEAR FOR OUR FACULTY: A MEASURE OF THEIR SUCCESS CAN BE SHOWN IN NUMBERS ON THIS SLIDE. IT HAS BEEN AN EXCEPTIONAL YEAR FOR OUR FACULTY: SEVEN FACULTY NAMED AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE FELLOWS; SIX FACULTY EARNED NSF CAREER GRANTS; THREE FULBRIGHT; TWO NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES FELLOWS; ONE PEW SCHOLAR IN THE BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES, IOWA STATE’S FIRST EVER! ONE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF INVENTORS INDUCTEE WE SET A NEW RECORD FOR EXTERNAL RESEARCH FUNDING AT $261 MILLION IMPROVED OUR TOP 100 WORLDWIDE — HER TEAM INCLUDES MEMBERS OF COLLEGES, INCLUDES ASSOCIATE DEANS FROM OUR COLLEGES ACROSS THE UNIVERSITY. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR WORK IN MAKING US BREAK THAT RECORD AND EXTERNAL RESEARCH FUNDING. WE IMPROVED OUR TOP 100 WHY RANKING FOURTH US PATENTS. TO 69. LAST YEAR WE WERE 83. OUR FACULTY SECURED A TOTAL OF 34 U.S. PATENTS LAST YEAR. THE ISU RESEARCH PARK, ANCHORED — CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF THE FACULTY AND STAFF. THE ISU RESEARCH PARK, ANCHORED BY THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORE FACILITY, CONTINUES TO FLOURISH WITH ACTIVITY FROM FACULTY AND STUDENTS. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BIZ THIS IS NOT JUST FROM IOWA BUT FROM THE WORLD. WE SEE THE ENTHUSIASM EVERY DAY. THERE IS NOBODY ON CAMPUS HAT HAS MORE ENERGY THAN OUR PRESIDENT, RICK SANDERS. WITH MORE THAN 90 COMPANIES, 2,000 EMPLOYEES, AND 300 STUDENT INTERNS THAT ARE THERE TO INNOVATE AND BRING OPPORTUNITIES NOT ONLY TO IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY, BUT TO OWA AND THE REST OF THE WORLD. ONE OF THE BIG SUCCESSES OF THE YEAR WAS THE OPENING OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL LEARNING QUARTER, A PARK WITHIN A PARK. IF YOU HAVEN’T TAKEN A DRIVE OUT TO THE FACILITY LATELY, I ENCOURAGE YOU TO DO SO. YOU CAN ENTER THIS PARK WITHIN A PARK AND HAVE A WONDERFUL WALK AND SEE WHAT IS GOING TO REALLY COME OVER TIME, BECOME AN EXTRAORDINARY RESOURCE, ONE OF STORY COUNTY’S FIRST PARKS OF AMES. SO A GREAT RESOURCE. IN ADDITION, WE WELCOMED A NUMBER OF NEW BUSINESSES TO THE PARK THIS YEAR. COLLINS AEROSPACE OPENED SATELLITE OFFICES AT THE PARK FOCUSED ON INNOVATION. JOHN DEERE RECENTLY CUT THE RIBBON ON ITS NEW 37,000 SQUARE FOOT SPRAYER TEST FACILITY. WE COULD GO ON AND ON ABOUT THE SUCCESSES AT THE RESEARCH PARK. OUR FACULTY AND STAFF ENGAGE WITH BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY. IT IS A GREAT PLACE TO BE. IF YOU’VE NOT BEEN OUT THERE, I ENCOURAGE YOU TO GO. THE BORDERS TO NOT STOP HERE IN STORY COUNTY. AT LAST COUNT COMPANIES THAT STARTED UP AT THE ISU RESEARCH PARK ARE NOW SPREAD ACROSS IOWA. THEY TOTALED 2500 INDIVIDUALS, ANOTHER GREAT SUCCESS FOR HOW WE BUILT OUR LAND-GRANT MISSION AND REALLY HELPING IOWA MOVE FORWARD IN TERMS OF ITS ECONOMIC VITALITY.>>OUR FACULTY AND STAFF ADAPT BE SUCCESSFUL WITHOUT A FACILITIES. WE’RE GOING TO CELEBRATE THE NEW FACILITIES THAT WE HAVE ON OUR CAMPUS AND TALK ABOUT JUST HOW IMPORTANT EACH OF THESE ARE IN MOVING FORWARD OUR MISSION. THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL PHOTO OF THAT ADVANCED TEACHING AND RESEARCH BUILDING. IT HOUSES THAT FACULTY FROM ENTOMOLOGY AND GENETICS AND DEVELOPMENT AND CELL BIOLOGY. IT WAS PART OF A BIG BIOSCIENCES EFFORT AND INCLUDED THE ADDITION OF SPACE TO BESSEY HALL,>>LET ME THINK ABOUT JUDEAN COME UP WITH THE COLLEGE THAT IS GROWN 40% AST FEW YEARS. THERE IS A TREMENDOUS NEED FOR NEW SPACE, SO THIS PRIVATELY FUNDED ADDITION WILL ADD TREMENDOUS SPACE TO STUDENTS TO WORK TOGETHER FOR FACULTY OFFICES AND FOR MORE TEAM SPACES FOR THE COLLEGE OF BUSINESS, THE IVY COLLEGE OF BUSINESS. HERE ON FRIDAY WE ARE GOING TO CELEBRATE THE RIBBON CUTTING FOUR THEN KNEW THE MAIL AND GRAIN SCIENCE COMPLEX. THIS IS A PROJECT THAT REALLY MEETS THE NEEDS AND INDUSTRY OF THE STATE BY TRAINING STUDENTS SO THAT THEY CAN LEARN WHAT IT MEANS TO BE INVOLVED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A FEED MILL. BUT THAT FEED MILL MEANS IN TERMS OF NOT ONLY PROVIDING NATHANIEL PEAT LIVESTOCK AND POULTRY, BUT FOR ALL F THE BIOSCIENCES THAT WE ARE INVOLVED IN. A BEAUTIFUL PICTURE OF THE NEW ART MUSEUM. THE ART MUSEUM WILL HAVE ITS OPENING HERE ON SEPTEMBER 19. IF YOU’RE INTERESTED IN COMING OVER AND CELEBRATED WITH US, I ENCOURAGE YOU TO PUT IT ON YOUR CALENDAR. IT REALLY BRINGS THAT ART MUSEUM THAT IS SO IMPORTANT TO OUR CURRICULUM HERE AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY. IT REALLY BRINGS IT INTO THE 21 st CENTURY. YOU WILL BE AMAZED AT THE BEAUTY OF OUR NEWLY RENOVATED FACILITY. AND NOW TO THE GARDENS. YOU WILL SEE THE BIG POWER THAT IS GOING UP CALLED SYCAMORE FALLS. THIS IS A NEW ADDITION TO THE REIMAN GARDENS THAT WILL BE COMPLETED NEXT SPRING. AT THIS STATE IT IS IMPORTANT TO SAY WHETHER PERMITTING. SO YOU HAVE PROBABLY SEEN THE POWER STRUCTURE AS IT HAS BEEN GOING UP. ONE INTERESTING DETAIL IS THAT PART OF THE STRUCTURE IS BEING BUILT USING WOOD FROM UNIVERSITY ‘S TO RECYCLE PROGRAM, HOW WE KEEP THE LUMBER FROM TREES THAT MUST, DOWN ON CAMPUS. CONSTRUCTION IS ALSO UNDERWAY ON A STUDENT ATHLETES SPORTS PERFORMANCE CENTER, A CENTER THAT WILL REALLY PROVIDE FOR OUR STUDENT ATHLETES A PLACE WITH A CODE TO GET SUPPORT FOR ACADEMICS, WHERE THEY GO FOR TRAINING, AND THEY GO FORWARD NUTRITION AS WELL. SO WE PUTTING ALL OF THAT UNDER ONE ROOF AND ALLOWING THEM TO COME TOGETHER OUR STUDENT ATHLETES FROM ALL SPORTS WILL BE AT THIS NEW FACILITY IN THE FUTURE. THE STUDENT INNOVATION CENTER IS AN EXTRAORDINARY COMPLEX, 0,140,000 SQUARE FEET. IT IS SLATED TO BE OPEN NEXT SEMESTER. IS GOING TO BE A PLACE WHERE OUR STUDENTS FROM EVERY COLLEGE ON THIS CAMPUS WILL COME TOGETHER TO INNOVATE AND CREATE AND TO WORK TOGETHER TO BRING THEIR NEW IDEAS TO FRUITION. THE OTHER DAY I RECEIVED AN E-MAIL FROM ONE OF OUR STUDENTS AND THE STUDENTS WROTE TO ASK ME IF WE WERE GOING TO HAVE A MEDIA PRODUCTION UNIT IN THE NEW BUILDING. SO I WAS PRETTY SURE THAT WE WERE BUT I CHECKED IN WITH THE NEW DIRECTOR AND HE WROTE BACK, YES INDEED, WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A PRODUCTION MEDIA SUITE AND THE STUDENT WROTE BACK SUCH AN EXCITED RESPONSE THAT I AM GOING TO SAY THE FOREVER, BUT THE BEST PART OF THE STUDENT’S E-MAIL IS I WILL SPREAD THE WORD. SO WHEN YOU HAVE STUDENTS SHARING WITH OTHER STUDENTS WHAT THE POSSIBILITIES ARE GOING TO BE IN THE STUDENT INNOVATION CENTER, WE KNOW THAT THEY’RE ALL GOING TO BE WALKING OVER THERE AND LEARNING HOW TO WORK TOGETHER IN CROSS DISCIPLINARY PROJECTS TO INNOVATE AND TO THINK ABOUT EVEN BECOMING AN ENTREPRENEUR. WHEN WE THINK ABOUT ENTREPRENEURSHIP, WE HAVE A LONG RECORD OF BEING FOCUSED ON ENTREPRENEURSHIP AT THIS UNIVERSITY. THE PAPA JOHN’S CENTER, THE LEADERSHIP, THE STARTUP FACTORIES, THAT PITCH COMPETITION SET THE ON ON CAMPUS ALL THE TIME, WE ARE ENGAGED IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP. OVER THIS PAST YEAR THE DEANS HAVE COME TOGETHER AND SAID WE WANT TO WORK TOGETHER TO HOW WE SEE INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP BE INFUSED INTO THE CURRICULUM. WE HAVE HAD A WONDERFUL SET OF CONVERSATIONS AND WE HAVE MADE GREAT PROGRESS. THIS YEAR AT THE STATE FAIR, THE DEAN’S ALL AGREED THAT WE SHOULD HIGHLIGHT WHAT WE ARE DOING AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND AT THE STATE FAIR. SO WE HAD MORE THAN 150 STUDENTS , AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS FROM AROUND THE STATE, AND PITCH THEIR IDEAS FOR INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP. YOU CAN SEE FROM THE SLIDE THAT THEY WERE STANDING ON A STAGE CALLED STANDING INNOVATION. DOES EVERYONE GET THAT? I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE FOLLOWING ALONG WITH ME. WE GIVE AWARDS IN THE LAST DAY OF THE FAIR. THE TOP AWARD WAS $5,000. AND IT WENT TO ONE OF OUR STUDENTS WHO JUST GRADUATED WHO STARTED A COMPANY CALLED CONTINUING AT NIGHT WITH HIS BROTHER, DAVID, WHO IS NOW HERE AS A FRESHMAN AND AGRONOMY. OF THESE TWO QUICK START OF A BUSINESS AND THEY HAVE NOW WORKED IN MANY STATES IN THE MIDWEST IN THE COMPANY THAT THEY STARTED WHILE HERE AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY. SOME OTHER AWARD-WINNING PROJECTS I SHOULD MENTION AS WELL. WE HAD SOME FOR AGERS THERE. YOU WOULD BE PLEASED TO KNOW THAT THE FOUR AGE GROUP THAT WON WON FOR A PROJECT CALLED ITS CIVIL DISCOURSE. HOW MANY OF YOU WOULD LIKE TO WORK ON THAT WITH THEM? SEVERAL — IT’S AN IMPORTANT THING THAT WE ALL NEED TO CARE ABOUT. THE COMMUNITY WINNER WAS FROM THE FAMILY FARMS AND NORTHEAST IOWA AND THEY PITCHED THE IDEA OF A NEW COMPANY THAT HEY ARE STARTING WITH THEIR DAIRY FARM THAT IS ABOUT COMING AND SLEEPING WITH THE DAIRY COW. IF ANYBODY WANTS TO DO THAT, WE CAN GET YOU IN CONTACT. I’M LOOKING AT HERE AND I CAN SEE DON WILL WANT TO TAKE UP THE COMPANY ON THE OFFER PRETTY QUICKLY. SO SLEEP WITH THE DAIRY COW, JUST LET ME KNOW IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN DOING THAT. SO INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP. CONNECTING WHAT WE ARE DOING AND OUR CURRICULUM WITH BUT WE ARE DOING AT THE NEW STUDENT INNOVATION CENTER. THIS IS TRULY GOING TO BE A WAY THAT WE CHANGE HOW STUDENTS, PARENTS, HOW IOWA THINKS ABOUT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY. AND OUR STUDENTS STAND OF THE STAGE AND SHARE THEIR IDEAS, THE TAXPAYERS OF IOWA WANT TO EAR THEIR STORIES. THAT WANT TO HEAR HOW STUDENTS ARE SUPPORTED BY OUR FACULTY AND STAFF IN THE CLASSROOM AND OUTSIDE CLASSROOM, HOW THEY ARE SUPPORTED IN DEVELOPING THEIR NEW CREATIVE IDEAS. AND STUDENTS ACHIEVE SUCCESS EVERY DAY. HERE IS A BEAUTIFUL PHOTO OF OUR COLD WATER SCHOLARS. OUR STUDENTS CONTINUE TO AMAZE US WITH THE HONORS THAT THEY RECEIVE. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE STORY IS THAT THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF NOMINEES THAT YOU CAN HAVE FOR GOLDWATER SCHOLARS IS FOUR. THIS YEAR IOWA STATE IS ONE OF ONLY 20 INSTITUTIONS INCLUDING YIELD, STANFORD, DUKE, AND OHIO STATE, TO HAVE ALL OF OUR NOMINEES SELECTED AS SCHOLARS. THIS IS A REFLECTION ON OUR GREAT STUDENTS, BUT IT IS ALSO AGAIN A REFLECTION ABOUT OUR FACULTY AND STAFF, THE WORK THEY DO INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM. WE ALSO HAD TWO STUDENTS NAMED UDALL SCHOLARS. CARISSA AND JACOB ARE TWO OF ONLY 55 STUDENTS FROM ACROSS THE UNITED STATES SELECTED FOR THIS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD. THE FOUNDATION AWARD SCHOLARSHIPS FOR LEADERSHIP, PUBLIC SERVICE, AND COMMITMENT TO ISSUES RELATED TO THE REQUIREMENT OR TWO NATIVE AMERICAN NATIONS. LAST BUT NOT LEAST IS COLIN POWELL, A GRADUATE STUDENT IN INTERIOR DESIGN. HE EARNED A FULBRIGHT AWARD IN THE SPENDING TAKE YEAR IN AUSTRIA. HE’S CONDUCTING RESEARCH ON PUBLIC HOUSING WITH AN EMPHASIS ON CREATING INNOVATIVE HOUSING SOLUTIONS. OUR STUDENTS EXCEL. WE COULD GO ON AND ON ALL DAY TELLING STORIES ABOUT THE SUCCESS OF OUR STUDENTS. LAST YEAR WE HAD THE LARGEST GRADUATING CLASS EVER. NEARLY 6900 STUDENTS, UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS EARNED THEIR DEGREE LAST YEAR. WHAT A GREAT SUCCESS. YOU SHOULD NOTE THAT STUDENTS ARE GRADUATING AT THE FASTEST RATE EVER AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY. THE AVERAGE TIME TO DEGREE IS 4.4 YEARS AND NEARLY 51% OF STUDENTS GRADUATE IN FOUR YEARS OR LESS. THAT IS AN ACCOMPLISHMENT. THAT IS AN IMPORTANT ACCOMPLISHMENT AS WE LOOK AT ISSUES OF STUDENT DEBT AND THE COST GO TO COLLEGE. ONE OF THE THINGS WE ARE DOING TO ADDRESS COST IS THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A NEW PROGRAM CALLED COMPLETION GRANTS. SO WILD WEEK GIVEAWAY LOTS OF SCHOLARSHIPS EVERY YEAR, WE ARE NOW ALSO GIVING AWAY COMPLETION GRANTS. SO STUDENTS ARE IN THEIR LAST YEAR, AYBE THEIR LAST SEMESTER AND THEY DON’T HAVE THE FUNDS TO COME BACK AND FINISH THEIR DEGREE, WE NOW HAVE PROGRAMS MANAGED BY COLLEGES AND STUDENT FINANCIAL AID THROUGH ROBERTA JOHNSON TO HELP STUDENTS HAVE ACCESS TO A GRANT THAT ALLOWS THEM TO COME BACK AND FINISH. THIS IS HOW WE BUILD THE RIGHT CULTURE AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY WE HAVE A WONDERFUL COMMENCEMENT WERE ALL THE STUDENTS, TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE. I SHOULD CORRECT MYSELF. WE HAVE TO HAVE TWO UNIVERSITY WIDE COMMENCEMENTS BECAUSE OF THE NUMBERS. WE ALSO HAVE A NUMBER OF SPECIAL COMMENCEMENTS WHERE OUR STUDENTS OF DIVERSITY CAN COME TOGETHER AND CELEBRATE IN THEIR OWN COMMUNITY AS WELL. WHAT YOU ARE SEEING HERE IS THE 2019 LAVENDER GRADUATION CEREMONY. WHAT A GREAT WAY TO SUPPORT ALL OF OUR STUDENTS AND ALL THE COMMUNITIES THAT THEY WILL REPRESENT AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY. ONE OF MY GOALS, ONE OF MY ASPIRATIONAL GOALS IS THAT OWA STATE UNIVERSITY WILL BE THE BEST LAND-GRANT UNIVERSITY AT PROVIDING A WELCOMING AND INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT. THIS IS A GOAL THAT TALK ABOUT THE DIFFERENT GROUPS EVERY WEEK, HOW DO WE PROVIDE THAT WELCOMING AND INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS, FOR ALL OF OUR FACULTY AND STAFF. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT PRIORITY AND WHAT DO WE HAVE TO STAY FOCUSED ON. THIS PAST YEAR WE STARTED WORKING ON THE RESULTS OF THE COMPREHENSIVE CAMPUS CLIMATE SURVEY THAT WAS CONDUCTED IN 2017 AND LED BY OUR VP FORD DIVERSITY. WE HAD WORKGROUPS FOCUSED ON THE DIFFERENT GROUPS THAT WE HAVEN’T IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY, OUR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS, GRADUATE STUDENTS AND POSTDOCTORAL SCHOLARS, FACULTY, AND OUR PROFESSIONAL AND SCIENTIFIC AND MERIT STAFF. THE WORKGROUPS IDENTIFIED A NUMBER OF SURVEYS AND CAME BACK WITH REPORTS THAT ARE NOW ON THE WEB TO READ SO YOU CAN EVALUATE AND SEE THE GOOD WORK THAT THEY DID. THERE ARE A NUMBER OF PROJECT INITIATIVES THAT I WOULD LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU TODAY. WE ARE MAKING GREAT PROGRESS WITH THE NEW STUDENT ON PORTING INITIATIVE THAT ALLOWS US TO PROVIDE MORE CONSISTENT TRAINING INFORMATION ON A VARIETY OF TOPICS RELATED TO CAMPUS CLIMATE , DIVERSITY, AND INCLUSION IN EQUITY FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS. WORK IS UNDERWAY TO DEVELOP A STABILITY CAMPAIGN THAT COMPLEMENTS AND AUGMENTS OUR PRINCIPLES OF COMMUNITY. I HAVE APPOINTED A CHILD CARE TASK FORCE TO IDENTIFY AND EVALUATE SOLUTIONS TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO HIGH-QUALITY CHILDCARE FOR ALL OF OUR COMMUNITY, FOR OUR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS, GRADUATE STUDENTS AND FACULTY AND TAFF. THESE ARE IMPORTANT PROJECTS. AND THE LEADERS OF THESE WORKGROUPS, THEY WILL BE HOLDING US ALL ACCOUNTABLE FOR HOW WE IMPLEMENT THE RECOMMENDATIONS THAT CAME FORWARD THROUGH THIS IMPORTANT PROCESS THAT WE AGAIN COMPLETED JUST THIS PAST SPRING SEMESTER. WE KNOW THAT THERE IS A LOT OF EXCELLENT WORK BEING DONE AROUND CAMPUS RELATED TO CLIMATE. IT IS HAPPENING EVERY DAY IN OUR COLLEGES, OUR DEPOSIT — DEPARTMENTS AND OTHER UNITS. HERE’S ONE EXAMPLE THAT I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE FROM THE COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND LIFE SCIENCES , A GROUP THAT WAS STARTED SEVERAL YEARS AGO CALLED A LEAD IT. IT STANDS FOR LEADERS ENGAGING IN AGRICULTURE, DIVERSITY, AND INCLUSION, AND TRUST. THE STUDENTS ARE TRAINED ON HOW THEY CAN E DIVERSITY LIAISONS TO STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS AND ACADEMIC DEPARTMENTS. THEY WORK WITH BEING ROBERSON AT THE ASSOCIATE DEAN AND THEY ARE REALLY LED AND GREAT SUPPORT BY OUR ASSISTANT DEAN AND BY THE KELLS MULTICULTURAL LIAISON OFFICER, A ELIZABETH MARTINEZ. SO A GREAT EXAMPLE F ANOTHER EFFORT TO HELP OUR MULTICULTURAL STUDENTS FEEL PART OF OUR COMMUNITY AND TO HELP ALL OF HER STUDENTS UNDERSTAND THE VALUE AND IMPORTANCE OF HAVING A DIVERSE AND INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT. JUST THIS YEAR HE COLLEGE OF HUMAN SCIENCES ANNOUNCED A NEW LEARNING COMMUNITY CALLED CONNECT FOUR. CARMEN FLAG IS THE COLLEGE OF HUMAN SCIENCES LEADING THIS EFFORT. IT IS OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS OF COLOR THAT OUR FIRST YEAR STUDENTS WITHIN THE COLLEGE OF HUMAN SCIENCES. AND THE COMMUNITY FOCUSES ON ACADEMIC SUCCESS, LEADERSHIP, AND NETWORKING. AT THIS POINT THE FOR LOOP WANT TO STOP AND JUST ACKNOWLEDGE THE WORK OF ALL OF OUR MULTICULTURAL LIAISON OFFICERS THAT ARE FOUND IN EVERY ONE OF OUR COLLEGES. THERE ON THE GROUND EVERY DAY ENGAGING WITH THEIR MULTICULTURAL STUDENTS, ENGAGING WITH OUR MAJORITY STUDENTS, ENGAGING WITH THEIR FACULTY AND STAFF TO WORK HARD TO BUILD A WELCOMING AND INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT THAT WE STRIVE FOR AT IOWA STATE. FINALLY I WANT TO MENTION THE NEW LAB TABLE — TECHNOLOGY LAB. WE SAY THAT AGAIN, THEN NEW ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY LET THEM OPEN THIS FALL IN DURUM HAUL. THIS PROVIDES A CENTRALIZED BASE FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES. STUDENTS CAN ACCESS ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES SUCH AS SPEECH TO TEXT TOOLS AND SCREEN READERS. I KNOW THAT THERE ARE MANY EFFORTS WENT GOING ON AROUND CAMPUS RELATED TO DIVERSITY, INCLUSION, TO PROVIDE A WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT AND A WANT TO THANK ALL OF YOU FOR THE WORK THAT YOU DO IN THIS AREA. I WANT TO ENCOURAGE YOU TO ALL DO MORE. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT GOAL FOR US AND WE ALL NEED TO ENGAGE IN EVERY DAY THINGS, HOW WE WELCOME SOMEBODY THAT LOOKS DIFFERENT THAN US, SOMEBODY THAT ADDRESSES DIFFERENT THAN US. SOMEBODY THAT WAS FROM ANOTHER STATE, NATION, AROUND THE WORLD. LET’S REACH OUT A HAND UP WELCOME TO EVERYONE. THIS IS A TOP PRIORITY FOR ME AS WE GO FORWARD IN THE COMING YEAR WELL, ESPN GAME DAY. WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO SAY. IT HAS REALLY BEEN AN EXTRAORDINARY YEAR FOR OUR ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT, FOR OUR STUDENT ATHLETES. ONE THING THAT I LEARNED AS THE NEW PRESIDENT UP IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY IS THE BAR THAT ALL OF OUR STUDENT ATHLETES HAVE TO REACH EVERY DAY AND OUR FACULTY AND STAFF ARE THERE HELPING OUR STUDENT ATHLETES, BUT THEY ARE STUDENTS, AND THEY EXCEL. THEY EXCEL IN THE CLASSROOM, THEY EXCEL IN THEIR SPORT. AND IT IS PART F HOW IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY BUILDS ANOTHER COMMUNITY. IT IS A PLACE WE ALL COME TOGETHER, STUDENTS, FACULTY, STAFF, OUR ALUMNI, DONORS, PARTNERS. WE CAN ALL COME TOGETHER AND WE CAN ALL COME TOGETHER TO BE IOWA [ APPLAUSE ] I WOULD CALL OUT A FEW PEOPLE HERE BUT JAMIE POLLARD HAS HAD AN EXTRAORDINARY YEAR. I DON’T KNOW IF HE WAS ABLE TO JOIN US TODAY. I THINK THAT HE WAS WORRIED ABOUT THE PARKING FOR THE GAME WITH ALL THE RAIN THAT WE HAVE GOTTEN. YOU AVE SEEN THE NEWS ABOUT THE SUCCESS. AND ALL OF OUR UNITS, WHETHER IT IS ATHLETICS OR COLLEGE, STUDENT SERVICES, PICK A UNIT. IT ALL IS ABOUT HAPPY INDIVIDUALS THAT BRING A GREAT LEVEL OF INTEGRITY TO THEIR POSITION. THAT IS WHAT MAKES IT WORK AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY. AS A THINK ABOUT HER SUCCESS AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY, WE COULDN’T DO WITHOUT THE ISU FOUNDATION AND I KNOW THAT I SAW THE RUST THE HOME ARE JONES, STAND UP AND WAVED. [ APPLAUSE ] THE RESOURCES THAT CAN AND, YOU SEE THE NUMBERS ON THE SCREEN, 18 MILLION IN STUDENT SUPPORT FROM LAST YEAR FROM DONUTS — DONORS THAT WANT TO HELP WITH COMPLETION GRANTS, 09 AND DOWN CHAIR PROFESSION OR SHIPS, FACULTY FELLOWSHIPS, IT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE. WE SIMPLY COULDN’T BE SUCCESSFUL WITHOUT THE FUNDRAISING THAT IS DONE EVERY DAY, THE FUNDRAISING THAT COMES BACK INTO THE UNIVERSITY TO SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS, OUR FACULTY AND STAFF. AS YOU RECALL BACK AT THE SLIDES THAT I WAS SHOWING YOU OUT THE NEW FACILITIES N CAMPUS, YOU HAVE TO REALIZE WHERE DID THAT MONEY, FROM. WELL, SOMETIMES IT COMES FROM THE STATE, THE STATE LEGISLATURE ALLOCATES DOLLARS TO SUPPORT A NEW FACILITY. SOME OF THOSE FACILITIES LIKE THE FEED MILL, GERDIN, THEY ARE PRIVATELY SUPPORTED. IT IS IMPORTANT TO RECOGNIZE THAT WE ARE IN A TIME PERIOD WHERE IT BECOMES MORE IMPORTANT FOR US TO ALLOW US TO COMPLETE OUR MISSION. SO THANK YOU TO THE ISU FOUNDATION FOR THE GREAT WORK THAT THEY DO EVERY DAY FOR IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY. AS I’M LOOKING AROUND THE ROOM AND I SEE SO MANY FRIENDS, LEADERS AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR IOWA STATE, I WANT TO RECOGNIZE ONE OTHER INDIVIDUAL BEFORE I GO ON TO CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES. I’M GOING TO MAKE HIM STAND. THAT IS JEFF JOHNSON. JEFF JOHNSON HAS TO STAND. YOU WILL SEE HIM AT GRADUATIONS. HE IS WORKING HARD EVERY DAY TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN OUR CURRENT STUDENTS AT OUR US. WE SOME OLD STUDENTS. SO A ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR WHAT HAPPENS IN THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION. SO ENOUGH CELEBRATING. THAT TALK ABOUT THE CHALLENGES. THIS IS A REAL PICTURE. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT? WHO WANTS TO VOLUNTEER? HERE IS A STUDENT CLIMBING A ROCK OVER AT THE LEAD RECREATION — NOT AT LEAD, STATE GYM. ARE YOU CLIMBING THAT WALL. SO THE FIRST CHALLENGE, LAST YEAR WE SAW A DECLINE IN ENROLLMENT. 1,004 STUDENTS THAT WE DROP LAST YEAR. AS WE LOSE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS, WE START TO LEARN PART OF THE IMPORTING CULTURE THAT IS ALWAYS BEEN PART OF THIS UNIVERSITY. THIS YEAR WE WILL HAVE ANOTHER DECLINE AND THOSE NUMBERS WILL COME OUT TOMORROW. YOU WILL SEE THAT THERE IS FURTHER IMPACT, ESPECIALLY AS WE THINK ABOUT OUR GRADUATE STUDENTS. OFTENTIMES OUR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ARE IN THAT GRADUATE STUDENT COMMUNITY. SO WE ARE GOING TO SEE A DECLINE . WE ALSO SEE SOME GOOD NEWS AND THAT STORY. WE STILL HAVE A VERY OBUST ENROLLMENT AND WE ARE VERY PROUD OF WHAT WE DO. IN SOME CASES WE GREW SO RAPIDLY IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS THAT THAT PUT A STRESS, A STRESS IN OUR FACILITIES, A STRESS ON FACULTY AND STAFF ANOTHER STUDENTS, SO WE WILL HAVE A TIME WARP WE ARE GOING TO BE LEVELING OFF AND STILL HAVING A VERY ROBUST ENROLLMENT. YOU LOSE STUDENT NUMBERS AND THEN YOU START TILL LOSE REVENUE BUDGET WOULD BE ANOTHER CHALLENGE THAT WE HAVE, CONSEQUENTLY AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY. SO LOSE A CUSTOMER, YOU LOSE REVENUE. LIKE ALL BUSINESSES IN IOWA, WE ARE A BUSINESSES. LIKE ALL BUSINESSES, WE HAVE INCREASED COSTS. SO WE HAVE WORKED HARD IN PLANNING FOR THE UPCOMING YEAR AND WHAT HAS BEEN A SHORTFALL THAT WAS CREATED A LARGE PART BECAUSE OF THE LOSS OR THE REDUCTION OF STUDENT NUMBERS. THE BOARD OF REGENTS HAS JUST SHARED THAT THEY ARE PROCEEDING WITH THEIR FIVE YEAR PLAN THIS YEAR. THIS YOUR WAS THE FIRST YEAR OF THAT PLAN, THE PLAN THAT CALLS FOR INCREASED TO WISHON, AMOUNT OF THAT INCREASE IS DETERMINED BY HOW MUCH FUNDING THE STATE PROVIDES TO IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY. THIS WAS THE FIRST STEP IN THE LEGISLATIVE PROCESS TO SEE WHERE IT WILL END UP WITH THE BUDGET. I WILL BE WORKING WITH CAROL LAN JENSEN, OUR NEW STATE RELATIONS OFFICER TO BE MAKING OUR CASE TO STATE LEGISLATORS ACROSS IOWA. SO ENROLLMENT AND BUDGET, TWO SERIES CHALLENGES THAT WE ARE WORKING ON. AND THEN, OF COURSE, WORKDAY AND APPROVED DELIVERY. WE COULD TURN THIS INTO A LISTENING SESSION. BUT YOU ALL KNOW WHY WE ARE MOVING FORWARD WITH THESE TWO BIG CHANGES THAT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY. IT WAS VERY CLEARLY EXPLAINED TO ME WHEN I WAS FIRST APPOINTED AS PRESIDENT, KRISTEN CONSTANT CAME ON BOARD SHORTLY AFTER THAT AS OUR INTERIM. KRISTIN EXPLAINED THAT WE HAD TWO MAINFRAME COMPUTERS THAT THESE TWO MAINFRAME COMPUTERS CAN FAIL AT ANY MINUTE. I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT GAVE ME SOME VERY SLEEPLESS NIGHTS. SHE ALSO TOLD ME THAT WE ONLY HAD TWO PEOPLE, ONE FOR EACH COMPUTER EVIDENTLY, THEY COULD STILL SPEAK THE LANGUAGE THAT THOSE MAINFRAME COMPUTERS SPOKE. SO WE HAVE BEEN LIVING ON BORROWED TIME FOR A VERY LONG PERIOD OF TIME. SO IS TIME FOR US TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THE NEW ENTERPRISE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR FINANCE AND HR. THAT’S WHAT WE DID. WE WORKED ON AND MANY PEOPLE HAVE WORKED ON IMPLEMENTING WORKDAY. BUT THE CONSULTANTS TOLD US EARLY ON IN THE PROCESS THAT ONCE WE TURNED ON THE SWITCH WE WOULD EITHER BE SUCCESSFUL OR NOT SUCCESSFUL AT GETTING PEOPLE PAID. WE WERE MOSTLY SUCCESSFUL, MORE PROBABLY MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN WE WERE WITH THE OLD SYSTEM. THAT IS A SURPRISE FOR PEOPLE. WE HAD SOME SUCCESS EARLY ON. THEN THEY TOLD US WE WOULD GO DOWN INTO KIND OF THIS ADOPTION TROUGH, THAT THERE WOULD BE THINGS THAT DIDN’T WORK EXACTLY RIGHT, THAT WE WOULD HEAR BUT THINGS THAT WE COULD’VE BEEN DIFFERENTLY AND NEEDED TO CHANGE SO WE HAVE BEEN SPENDING TIME LISTENING. WHAT DO WE NEED TO HEAR.>>WE WANT TO CONTINUE TO LISTEN AND HEAR HOW IT IS GOING AND WHAT WE NEED TO BE DOING DIFFERENTLY. WE CAN CELEBRATE SOME GREAT SUCCESSES AND HOW WORKDAY HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED. WE CAN ALSO TALK ABOUT THE THINGS THAT HAVE NOT WORKED. ALONG WITH WORKDAY IT WAS IMPORTANT THAT WE ALSO IMPLEMENT AND IMPROVED SERVICE DELIVERY, BECAUSE WE NEEDED INDIVIDUALS THAT COULD TRULY BECOME OUR EXPERTS AND HOW TO RUN THIS VERY EXPENSIVE SYSTEM THAT WE HAD PURCHASED. SO WE ARE MOVING FORWARD ON WORKDAY AND IMPROVE ERVICE DELIVERY. I THINK IT IS GOING TO TAKE US SIX MONTHS TO GET TO REPLACE WERE WE FEEL OOD ABOUT THIS PROGRAM. WE ARE GOING TO GET THERE. AT THIS POINT I THINK THAT I COULD SAY EVERYBODY IN THIS ROOM HAS THAT AN EXPERIENCE WITH WORKDAY. LET’S HAVE THE THE INDIVIDUALS THAT WORK HARD TO IMPLEMENT WORKDAY AND IMPROVE SERVICE DELIVERY STAND. NOBODY IS GOING TO THROW A TOMATO. PLEASE STAND AND BE RECOGNIZED. [ APPLAUSE ] SO THOSE ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES. WE CAN TALK ABOUT OTHERS, BUT THESE ARE BIG CHANGES THAT ARE OCCURRING AT IOWA STATE. REDUCED TO KNOW ENROLLMENT, BUDGETARY CHANGES, WORKDAY — SO LET’S TALK BUT THE FUTURE. TOGETHER UN I, WE ARE CREATING THE FUTURE. SOME OF THE SUCCESSES WE TALKED ABOUT TODAY ALREADY, THEY ARE GOING TO HELP US CREATE THE FUTURE. THE OPENING OF THE STUDENT INNOVATION CENTER, AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP INTO THE CURRICULUM IS GOING TO CHANGE TO IOWA STATE’S. WE ARE GOING TO BE KNOWN AS A LEADER IN INNOVATION, CREATIVITY , AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP WE ARE NOT JUST GOING TO OPEN THIS NEW BUILDING THAT WE ARE ACTUALLY — WE HAD A GIFT FROM A DONOR TO BRANDON MARK AT THE OPENING STUDENT INNOVATION CENTER. SWEAT THE END AT THE ARE IN THE BEGINNING OF NEXT YEAR YOU’RE GOING TO START TO SEE A CAMPAIGN THAT IS OING TO LET THE IOWA STATE AND THE WORK IT IS DOING IN THIS AREA IN A WAY THAT I THINK YOU WON’T BELIEVE. I THINK THAT THIS NEW IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY FOCUS ON INNOVATION AND OXFORD OUR SHIP WILL HELP US ATTRACT STUDENTS AND I THINK IT WILL HELP US ATTRACT TACKLE TEA AND STAFF AND ALSO BE ABOUT INNOVATING AND CREATING. IN THE COMING YEAR I THINK WE HAVE TREMENDOUS POSSIBILITIES FOR NEW INVESTMENTS IN OUR FACILITIES. WE ARE ALREADY TALKING ABOUT A POSSIBLE NEW BUILDING FOR INDUSTRIAL MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS AND ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT. WE ARE HAVING CONVERSATIONS ABOUT WHAT DO WE DO TO INVEST IN NEW SPACE FOR THE AMES LAB. WE ARE SO BLESSED TO BE THE ONLY INSTITUTION THAT LITERALLY HOUSE IS A DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY LAB ON CAMPUS. WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN KNOWN AS AN EFFICIENT PUBLIC RESEARCH UNIVERSITY. IN MY OPINION, IT MATTERS EVEN MORE TODAY. THAT’S HY WORKDAY AND IMPROVED SERVICE DELIVERY MATTERS. THEY WILL HELP US URTHER INCREASE OUR EFFICIENCY. IT WILL BE CRITICALLY IMPORTANT THAT WE ARE ABLE TO DO THAT. NEW EFFICIENCIES ALLOW US TO BETTER MANAGE OUR BUDGET. IF WE COULD BETTER MANAGE OUR BUDGET, VAN WEEKEND FREE UP OUR RESOURCES. WE CAN FREE UP RESOURCES FOR PRIORITIES. MY TOP RARITY CONTINUES TO BE HOW WE PROVIDE COMPETITIVE SALARIES FOR OUR FACULTY AND STAFF. WE’RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO FOCUS ON TELLING THE STORY TO LEGISLATORS THAT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY PROVIDES A RETURN ON INVESTMENT. WE SHOULD DEMONSTRATE THAT RETURN ON INVESTMENT EVERY DAY. WE ARE GOING TO DO A BETTER JOB OF TELLING THAT STORY TO STATE LEGISLATOR HORSE. SO WE ARE GOING TO CREATE THE FUTURE TOGETHER. IT IS GOING TO BE EVEN BETTER THAN EXTRAORDINARY HISTORIC PAST SO I AM PROUD OF IOWA STATE. I AM PROUD TO BE YOUR PRESIDENT. I WANT TO THANK EACH OF YOU FOR THE HARD WORK THAT YOU CONTRIBUTE EVERY DAY TO ALLOW US TO BRING EXCELLENCE TO OUR TEACHING RESEARCH AND EXTENSION PROGRAMS AND FOR SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS IN SO MANY DIFFERENT WAYS. SO I HOPE YOU WILL CONTINUE TO JOIN ME IN MAKING IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY THE VERY BEST THAT IT CAN BE. THANK YOU FOR COMING. [ APPLAUSE ] YOU’RE ALL THINKING I WENT ON TOO LONG, BUT I WOULD BE HAPPY TO TAKE SOME QUESTIONS IF YOU ARE O WILLING TO HANG WITH BE A LITTLE BIT LONGER. QUESTIONS? YOU CAN COME UP TO A MICROPHONE. AND SHE, MEGAN WILL TAKE A QUESTION. ANYTHING ON YOUR MIND. WE CAN TALK ABOUT WORKDAY. I’M ALWAYS CONCERNED WHEN NO ONE HAS — DAWN, WILL YOU HELP ME? YOU HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT THE SLEEPING WITH THE DAIRY COW PROJECT?>>IF NOT, THANK YOU FOR COMING. IT HAS BEEN A PLEASURE TO SEE ALL OF YOU. OH, WE AVE A QUESTION. I DIDN’T GET OFF THE STAGE QUICK ENOUGH.>>YES, THE TROUBLEMAKER. SO THERE IS A VERY POPULAR METAPHOR BEING USED BY ENROLLMENT CALLED THE ENROLLMENT CLIFF. I LIKE TO THINK OF IT AS NOT ONLY AN ENROLLMENT CLIFF BUT A HURRICANE BECAUSE IT IS OING TO BRING DEMOGRAPHIC CHANGES TO OUR STUDENT BODY AND TO OUR COMMUNITIES. I WAS WONDERING IF YOU WOULD BE KIND ENOUGH TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT.>>CERTAINLY. WE KNOW THAT IN THE GREAT RECESSION OF 2008, THE BIRTHRATE IN THE UNITED STATES DROPPED DRAMATICALLY. ESPECIALLY IN THE COMMUNITIES THAT YOU WOULD THINK UP FOR STUDENTS TYPICALLY HAVE FAMILIES WERE STUDENTS TYPICALLY HAVE COME TO THE UNIVERSITY STUDY. SO ALL OF THE INDIVIDUALS LOOKING STRICTLY A DEMOGRAPHICS SAY THAT WE ARE DROPPING OFF A CLIFF IN 2025. SO THAT IS ONE WAY OF LOOKING OUT WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN OUT THERE. AND THEN WE TALK ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY THAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THERE FOR IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY FROM OUR VERY FIRST DAY, THE VERY FIRST PRESIDENT OF IOWA STATE SAID IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY WOULD BE OPEN TO EVERYONE. IT WOULD BE OPEN TO MEN AND WOMEN. IT WOULD BE OPEN TO ANY INDIVIDUAL REGARDLESS OF RACE. THAT WAS IN 1869. SO WE HAD THIS OPPORTUNITY TO CONTINUE TO FILL OUR LAND-GRANT MISSION TO WELCOME EVERYONE REGARDLESS OF GENDER, RACE, SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS TO IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY. IF WE DO THAT RIGHT, WE WILL LOOK QUITE DIFFERENTLY AS THIS DEMOGRAPHIC MIX CHANGES AND 2025 . I SAY LET’S PREPARE FOR THE THAT LET’S WELCOME AND DEMONSTRATE ENTREPRENEURSHIP THAT THEY CAN, AND BE A PART OF.>>I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT CHANGING RELATIONS WITH CHINA IN PARTICULAR. THEY HAVE TREMENDOUS INCREASES IN ENROLLMENT IN COLLEGE AND ALSO THEY ARE HIRING MORE FACULTY TO DO RESEARCH AND NOT SO MUCH TEACHING. I ALSO HEARD THAT THERE MAY BE PROBLEMS IN THEM THEN COMING TO THE UNITED STATES OR A SENTIMENT THAT MAKES IT LESS LIKELY FOR THEM TO BE COMING. THEY’RE THERE ARE ALL THESE AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS — [INDISCERNIBLE]>>WELL, OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH CHINA IN IOWA ANYWAY, WE ARE LESS THAT AMBASSADOR BRANSTON THIS OVER THERE. WE HAVE SOME NICE OPPORTUNITIES BECAUSE OF THAT. BUT THE REALITY IS THAT SINCE 2016 THE NUMBER OF CHINESE STUDENTS COMING TO IOWA STATE WITHOUT CONSIDERING THE NUMBERS THAT WILL COME OUT TOMORROW HAVE DROPPED MORE THAN 300. THERE ARE REGULAR STORIES AND CHINESE PAPERS THAT CHINESE STUDENTS SHOULDN’T, AND STUDY IN THE US. SO THIS IS A PROBLEM, IN MY OPINION. WE WANT TO WELCOME STUDENTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. IT HAS BEEN PART OF HO IOWA STATE’S. IF THOSE STUDENTS KNOW THEY CAN GO TO UNIVERSITIES IN CANADA, AUSTRALIA, EUROPE, THEY CAN GO ANYWHERE. SO I THINK THAT WE HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF A PROBLEM. HOW TO USE ALL OF THE CONNECTIONS OF OUR FACULTY AND STAFF AT ALL THESE DIFFERENT COUNTRIES TO FURTHER CONTINUE THE SAKE YOU ARE WELCOME AND IOWA STATE, AND JOIN US THAT IOWA STATE.>>I JUST WANTED TO MAKE A COMMENT GOING BACK TO THE CLIFF COMPLEX JUST A, THAT BUT THE THOUGHT WAS INTERESTING. THE NEW YORK TIMES HAD AN ARTICLE BOUT SOME COLLEGES MOVING INTO. [INDISCERNIBLE]>>UP KRISTEN IS SIMPLY SAYING WHAT ARE GOING TO BE INNOVATIONS THAT WE THINK ABOUT. INDIVIDUALS THAT ARE 50 ARE GOING TO GO BACK AND GET A DIFFERENT DEGREE, THEY ARE GOING TO BE AT A UNIVERSITY STUDYING AGAIN. THEY’RE GOING TO BE ALL SORTS F OPPORTUNITY. RIGHT NOW WE DO — OUR RETIREE COURSES THAT WE PROVIDE THROUGH THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION. THIS COULD BE MUCH DIFFERENT TYPE OF PROGRAM THAT WE COULD OFFER. WE KNOW OUR DEANS HAVE GOTTEN MUCH MORE INTERESTED IN LOOKING AT WHAT OF THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR ONLINE DISTANCE EDUCATION. SO THAT WILL BE ANOTHER WAY THAT WE THINK ABOUT THE FUTURE AS WELL.>>I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT SOMETHING THAT IS PROBABLY ON ALL OF OUR MINDS IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER AND THAT IS THE UPCOMING ELECTIONS AND CAUCUSES AND THE GENERAL ELECTION NEXT YEAR. I’M JUST CURIOUS ABOUT YOUR INSIGHTS, RECOMMENDATIONS, AS WE HEAD INTO THIS PERIOD AS UNIVERSITY AND FACULTY AND AS A BROADER COMMUNITY AND HOW TO ENGAGE IN CIVIL CONVERSATIONS AND NOT BE TOO POLITICAL.>>WELL, IT IS REALLY CRITICALLY IMPORTANT THAT EVERYBODY BE ENGAGED IN THE DEMOCRATIC PROCESS. THAT IS WHAT MAKES AMERICA GREAT WE HAVE TO ENGAGE, BUT IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU DO SO IN YOUR PRIVATE LIVES, THAT YOU USE YOUR OWN PERSONAL E-MAILS IF YOU ARE GOING TO ENDORSE A CANDIDATE OR WRITE A LETTER, BUT IN THE CLASSROOM, IN THE CLASSROOM HELPING YOUR STUDENTS HAVE CONVERSATIONS, DOING SO IN A WAY THAT DOESN’T HAVE A TONE THAT YOU ARE TAKING TO YOUR PRIVATE PREFERENCES INTO THE CLASSROOM I THINK IS IMPORTANT. I KNOW THAT THE PROVOST IS VERY SERIOUS ABOUT THE CONVERSATIONS THAT HE IS HAVING WITH THE PRESENT THE OF THE ACT OF THE SENATE. JONATHAN, YOU HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT WHAT WE DO. WOULD YOU WANT TO MAKE A COMMENT ON WHERE THAT IS SO FAR ARE YOU NOT READY. OUT OF THE FREEZER SO I WILL TRY TO INTERPRET WHAT I UNDERSTAND LIKE IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN, WE ARE GOING TO LEAVE CAUCUSED MAKE DECISIONS TO THE FACULTY. I THINK THAT THAT IS GOING TO BE THE BEST THING THAT WE CAN DO AND MAKE SURE THAT ALLOWS HINGS TO HAPPEN THAT HAVE TO HAPPEN IN COURSES AND IN THE CURRICULUM.>>HELLO, WENDY. COULD YOU TALK ABOUT THE ROLE OF EXTENSION THAT YOUR UNIVERSITY UNIVERSITY, IN PARTICULAR IN LIGHT OF — [INDISCERNIBLE] CAN WE USE EDUCATION OUT INTO THE WORLD?>>CERTAINLY. WE HAVE A VERY VIBRANT EXTENSION SERVICE ACROSS THE 99 COUNTIES. VICE PRESIDENT FOR EXTENSION AND OUTREACH DOES A GREAT JOB IN HELPING TO CONNECT TO COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE STATE. I THINK THAT THAT IS A RESOURCE THAT CONTINUES TO GIVE US A VERY SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY TO ONNECT IN IOWA. I KNOW THAT EXTENSION STANDS READY TO WORK WITH COLLEGES IN TERMS OF THE DELIVERY OF DIFFERENT PROGRAMS AND TO BE ENGAGED IN UNDERSTANDING WHAT THE OPTIONS ARE, EVEN FOR COURSES THAT ARE DELIVERED FOR CREDIT. SO WE HAVE GREAT EXTENSION SERVICE. IT IS GOING TO CONTINUE TO PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN IOWA. WELL, IT’S REALLY BEEN A PLEASURE TO ADDRESSEE THIS AFTERNOON. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS. PLEASE SHARE YOUR CONCERNS. I ENJOYED THE OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR FROM YOU AND HOW WE SHOULD MOVE FORWARD AT THIS GREAT UNIVERSITY. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
